Natural Defense Ingredients & Functions

Helpful Definitions:

Prebiotic - compounds in food that induce the growth or activity of beneficial microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi. The most common example is in the gastrointestinal tract, where prebiotics can alter the composition of organisms in the gut or rumen microbiome. Non-viable or unalive compounds.

  • Probiotic - live microorganisms intended to provide health benefits when consumed, generally by improving or restoring the gut or rumen flora.
  • Enzymes - Macromolecular biological catalysts. They accelerate or catalyze chemical reactions, in this case reactions associated with digestion.
  • Essential Oils - concentrated chemical compounds from plants.
  • MOS - mannan oligosaccharide and beta glucan yeast cell wall components make up MOS yeast products. These yeast cell wall fractions bind a broad range of pathogens and promote gut health while supporting the immune system.

Ingredients:

  • Mannan oligosaccharides and beta glucan yeast cell wall fractions (MOS)
    • Functions/Purpose - derived from cell wall fractions of Saccaromyces cerevisiae, with research proven benefits and a clearly defined mode of action
      • Benefits - improvement in gut and intestinal mucosal integrity during health challenges, improvements in daily gain and feed efficiency during health challenges, and improvements in immunoglobulin production (an immune response measure) during gestation and lactation of health challenged animals
      • Mode of Action - binds a broad spectrum of major pathogen bacteria such as E.coli and Salmonella, which reduces the bacteria's ability to attach to the intestine. Humoral and cell mediated immune responses during health challengers demonstrate raising the animals natural self-defense mechanisms during times of health challenges.
  • Killed prebiotic yeast
    • Functions/Purpose - killed yeast has prebiotic function, improves fiber digestion, maintains stable rumen pH during times of diet transitions, and improve animal production and performance. Yeast can function as a prebiotic to increase the growth of rumen microflora, which leads to increased microbial protein for digestion. Improving gut health through these functions leads to increased production and performance often reported in increased average daily gain, improved feed efficiency, increased intake and improved milk yield.
      • Mode of Action - still not completely defined. The rumen microflora is postively impacted by the presence of killed yeast, thought to be through prebiotic function due to increased growth of rumen microflora and improved fiber digestion in its presence.
  • Live yeast and bacillus coagulan combination product
    • Functions/Purpose - live yeast functions as an oxygen scavenger in the rumen, improving the rumen environment. Live yeast will have similar function as killed yeast once it becomes nonviable. Bacillus coagulans a lactic acid forming bacteria known to provide probiotic function to the rumen environment.
  • Enzymes and Probiotics
    • Functions/Purpose - phytase, xylanase, amylas, cellulose, kipase, protease, pectinase, beta-glucanase are all enzymes and Propionibacterium freudenreichi, Bacillus subtilis, and Saccharamyces cerevisiae are all probiotics. The enzymes function to accelerate and improve digestive reactions, while the probiotics function to improve rumen microflora and rumen health.
  • Yucca
    • Functions/Purpose - a plant based product that can aid in digestion efficiency, boost immunity, and inhibit oxidative stress in some reports.
  • Essential Oils
    • Functions/Purpose - may provide immune support through antioxidant properties, contains anti-inflammatory properties, and may improve digestion processes.

General Product Statement - The above ingredients were blended together to provide an immune support supplement for cattle. Cattle under stress conditions or with potential to improve feed efficiency may benefit from this product. The ingredients chosen were selected based on the impact they have in the rumen. All ingredients were selected to either modify or benefit the rumen bugs and/or environment. Supplementing cattle to enhance their rumen microflora and overall environment usually results in an increased performance and production (average daily gain, body weight, dry matter intake, feed efficiency, milk production, etc.) and may assist with increasing immune status of the animals (fewer sick pulls and treatments, less animals off feed during times of stress, etc.).
